The City of Vincennes has a new, transportation system that is free for students.
The Vincennes Trolley is operated by Vincennes YMCA’s VanGo program and aims to ease the burden on VanGo’s on-demand transportation service.
The Vincennes Trolley had its first official ride in early December, starting at City Hall, 201 Vigo St., following a special ribbon cutting ceremony.
Heidi Tasa, the university’s dean of global diversity, expressed appreciation for the new trolley as so many students are on campus without a vehicle.
“This new mode of transportation really helps the international students who love their trips to Walmart,” she said.
The trolley has 53 stops positioned throughout Knox County and runs every hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Stops include locations like Good Samaritan Hospital and the Dollar General on Eighth Street.
“Students who may not have a car and are interested in part-time jobs off campus can now rely on the trolley for transportation,” said Director of Career Services Trenton Lee.
The trolley is free to all and was funded, in part, with monies from the state’s Hoosier Enduring Legacy Program , or HELP.
HELP funds, which required city buy-in, were meant to fill in identified gaps in services. A lack of regular public ransportation was identified early on, officials say.
Community Coordinator for the City of Vincennes Jamie Dugan said, “Transportation has always come up in community conversations.”
“It was the top outcome of our survey, tying into health, wellness, and economic development,” she said.
Riders are encouraged to arrive five minutes early to any assigned stop. Those interested in using the service can scan the QR code on the brochure at City
Hall, the YMCA, or on any of the trolley stop signs throughout town to download the PassioGo app. The app shares all of the route information, stops, and the trolley’s current location.
