The Vincennes University Theater Department this weekend is opening its latest show, Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit.
The play centers around a spoof of the popular TV show, Law and Order, where detectives try to solve the case surrounding the three little pigs. One of the characters, Detective H.D., is played by Jay Hopkins, a second year theater arts and special education major.
Hopkins has had previous experience doing theater, having done it all four years of high school.
When asked for advice for other aspiring actors, Hopkins noted “you can always improve on yourself, even if the scene goes bad, just keep practicing over and over again.”
Other actors in the show noted other advice such as, “to get out there, and put yourself out there, give it your all, and if something goes wrong: just try again, because nobody’s perfect,” said Elliot Williams, a first year theater arts major.
Actors and actresses have many different methods for getting into character, like different exercises and activities, according to Kendra Clauser, an Assistant Professor of Theatre.
“In this play, a lot of it has just been encouraging the actors to kind of get bigger, and over the top,” she said.
Anyone can audition for a show, according to Clauser. The theater department hosts one show in the fall and two in the spring. Theater classes are open to anyone on campus as an elective, said Clauser.
Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit is showing at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.
