As the final weeks of the semester approach at Vincennes University, students often face mounting pressure from exams, deadlines and outside responsibilities.
Academic coach Jennifer Hensley said procrastination is one of the biggest mistakes students make, especially when assignments are pushed off until the last minute.
She explained that staying organized with a calendar or to-do list can help students manage their time more effectively. Scheduling study time while also allowing for breaks is another key strategy for avoiding burnout some may face in these later weeks of the semester. These simple habits can make a significant difference in staying on track.
When multiple assignments are due at once, prioritizing becomes essential. Hensley suggests that focus on tasks that take the most time and are worth the most points to avoid falling behind in major areas. She also noted that motivation can be difficult to maintain late in the semester, encouraging students to ask for help and communicate with others. Rewarding progress after completing tasks can also help students stay motivated.
Keeping academics as the top priority, she said “is crucial during this busy time.”
Hensley emphasized that students should take action if they are worried about passing a class. Communicating with professors and meeting with their academic advisor can provide guidance and possible solutions. She stressed that it is never too late to ask for help and that going to office hours or speaking in person can be especially effective. Warning signs such as missing class, not turning in assignments and producing low-quality work can indicate a student is falling behind. Class attendance, she added “is one of the most important factors for success in the final weeks.”
Campus resources also play an important role in helping students finish the semester strong. Tutoring labs, the Student Success Center and academic coaches can provide support and introduce new studying strategies. Hensley advised students to avoid cramming and, instead, begin preparing for exams as early as possible. She also highlighted the importance of mental health, noting that managing stress is essential for academic success.
For students feeling overwhelmed, her advice is to remember their why and to stay focused on their goals.
