Students at Vincennes University have a chance to go behind the scenes at athletic events with Blazer Vision.
“Giving students the opportunity to come in and work behind the scenes is a big reason (why we do this),” said Athletics Marketing Community Engagement and BlazerVision Coordinator Stewart Brooking.
Each employee at BlazerVision gets hands-on, “real-world” experience while working the game, he said.
“You can learn things from a textbook, from a lecture, from a professor — don’t get me wrong, but I think the best way to learn how to do things is to watch how it’s done or to get your hands on it and try it out for yourself,” Brooking said.
One convenience with Blazer Vision is that there are many VU students who have different majors working the games.
“We have sports management; we have people who are in broadcasting,” said Brooking.
The opportunity often fills students with anticipation. Broadcasting student Jordan Schaus said he is looking forward to “pretty much all of it.”
Students who work at BlazerVision get to work with some unique equipment, too.
“We have an audio board. It kind of controls the music during halftime. Right now we are in volleyball, so when they switch courts, sides, or positions, we play some music,” said Brooking.
Broadcasting students can also place their experience at BlazerVision on their resumes.
“If you can say I have professional experience, then (companies) are going to look at that a lot differently than they are a student-run organization,” said Brooking.
Blazer Vision is an important part of the games, once that enhances the audience’s experience.
“I think when you’re a sports fan, you understand the difference between college and high school sports, and a lot of that has to do with what we do. There are very few high schools, if any, that have a jumbotron like what we have in the area,” said Brooking.
BlazerVision will also look to expand this basketball season.
“We are hoping to get three cameras rolling during basketball season,” said Brooking.
