As spring storms and unpredictable weather patterns move through Indiana, Vincennes University students, especially those living on campus, should be familiar with emergency procedures.
Each dormitory has established emergency protocols overseen by Resident Assistants (RAs). These procedures are designed to keep students safe during severe weather events, such as tornadoes, flash floods, and thunderstorms.
“If you live in a dorm, your RA should know exactly where you’re supposed to go in case of a tornado or other severe weather,” said Knox County EMA Director John Streeter.
Students should take shelter as soon as possible if there is a warning for tornadoes or other severe weather.
Streeter said, “There should be a plan for every building on campus.”
Beyond on-site safety measures, VU provides emergency resources online through its official university website. This includes detailed emergency plans and designated shelter locations for various warnings or threats.
Students can also receive real-time alerts through the Rave Alert system, which sends emergency texts and emails to those who opt in.
Streeter also said students can use the CodeRed app, which delivers emergency notifications via text.
“It’s good to have text alerts because sometimes you might not be able to hear outside sirens,” Streeter said.
Both systems provide crucial warnings, ensuring students are informed and prepared as quickly as possible.
