The Vincennes University Student Activities Committee is trying something a little different this year, engaging with current social media trends in an effort to connect with students.
Whether it’s a new dance craze or a comical sound, new trends emerge on social media apps like TikTok and Instagram every day. Committee member Marissa Bradley said she’s always trying to keep up.
“I have a folder on the Student Activities account, and anytime I see something we could incorporate for events, or even poke fun at college life, I’ll save it and figure out how to implement it,” she said.
Bradley added, “I would say staying on top of trends is in between easy and really difficult. There are some trends I think would be fun to post, but I also know that some things don’t go with our university policy.”
Bradley said when planning a social media post, she strives to stay on trend but to also make the video relatable, too.
But they’re not only meant to entertain. The videos also work to keep students informed of important updates and events happening on campus, things like safety updates and weather-related closures.
Student Activities Director Elizabeth Hutchinson added, “We have several events planned for this semester. One upcoming event that is new to us is our Build-Your-Own Bouquet.”
Students will be able to put together their own bouquet of flowers, whether to keep or give away to a sweetheart.
Student engagement with the videos is increasing, so they are hopeful it will begin to translate into more attending these events and working to make connections across campus.
